Qld: Howard still living in the 50s O Gorman

The Australian Council for Civil Liberties says Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD'S bid to
stop single women accessing IVF programs shows he's living in his own ancient and irrelevant
world.

President TERRY O'GORMAN has criticised Mr HOWARD'S call to amend the Sexual Discrimination
Act, saying the prime minister should recognise that community values have changed since
the 1950s.

He says in human rights, UN bashing and many social issues he's living in his idyllic,
not necessarily real life, era of the 1950s.

Mr O'GORMAN says there are many different forms of the family in the year 2000 and
whole concept of the family is evolving.

Mr HOWARD'S move follows a court ruling in Victoria that a state law banning single
women using the IVF program has breached the federal act.

The federal government wants the amendment to ensure states such as Victoria and Western
Australia maintain legislation to keep the ban.
