Rick Telander's column last Wednesday (on Bob Probert) was, in aword, weak. As a native of Detroit, I have heard most of it before.Morning DJs playing dueling wisecracks and sportswriters dealing withcomplex issues such as substance abuse with simplistic remarks like"he's stupid" or "a bad guy" are nothing new.
It was not the rehash of the usual thoughtless garbage thatmoved me to write, however. Nor was it the obvious inaccuracy of thetitle of the piece - "The Probert Miracle Cure Is Tough Product toSell." Actually, it was a bit of new thoughtless garbage from Mr.Telander that inspired this letter.
