Kin, cops angry as beating death brings no charges Case isn't clear-cut, explains state's attorney's office

Dorothy Williams thinks prosecutors are letting her son's killersget away with murder.

Bobby Joe Johnson was beaten to death March 28 by a 23-year-oldman and at least four boys, ages 10 through 16, police say.

Detectives questioned the 23-year-old and 16-year-old. Theyadmitted striking Johnson, and four witnesses identified theattackers in lineups and described the beatings, a police sourcesaid. An autopsy showed Johnson died of a head wound, and his deathwas ruled a homicide.

Yet prosecutors declined to file murder charges--angering policeand Johnson's mother.

"A murder is a murder," said Williams, 58. "Let a jury decide."
